Your first regional nursing job: questions to ask before you accept
A good interview works both ways. It helps an employer understand your skills and helps you decide whether a regional nursing role offers the right responsibilities and support. Use these questions to turn an attractive opportunity into a clear, practical plan.
What will I be expected to do?
Ask about the service, patient group and usual duties. Discuss your recent clinical experience honestly, including skills you have not used for a while. Ask which competencies must be confirmed before you work independently. A regional location is not a reason to practise beyond your competence or authorised scope. Request a position description and identify who will clarify responsibilities when you start.
Who will support me on each shift?
Ask who is available for clinical escalation, how after-hours support works and what happens when a patient needs a higher level of care. Find out how orientation is structured, whether you have a named contact and how unfamiliar equipment or procedures are introduced. NSW Health notes that rural teams can be smaller and care needs diverse, making it useful to discuss the specific support available at this workplace.
What do the roster and employment terms actually say?
Request the written offer and review the employer, employment type, work location, hours and pay arrangements. Ask how weekends, nights, overtime and roster changes are handled. Clarify on-call expectations, if any. Keep a list of unanswered questions and resolve them before accepting. A broad description of flexibility should be translated into arrangements you and the employer both understand.
Which relocation arrangements are confirmed?
If housing, travel assistance or other incentives are discussed, ask for the terms in writing, including eligibility, duration and any repayment conditions. Check the distance between accommodation and the workplace. Do not assume a NSW Health program applies to a role with another employer or that an advertised incentive applies to every vacancy. Budget for costs that have not been explicitly covered.
What must be ready before the start date?
Confirm registration and any conditions, work rights, references and the role-specific screening and evidence the employer requires. Ask how to submit sensitive documents securely. Keep your résumé current and explain any gaps or changes in clinical practice. For an international move, coordinate recruitment with the separate registration and work-rights processes rather than relying on an estimated arrival date.
How will we review the first month?
Agree on an early check-in to discuss orientation, workload and settling in. Ask how to raise concerns and who your contact is if the planned arrangements change. Keep copies of your offer and confirmed arrangements. When approaching HPI, start with your résumé, preferred regions, registration status and availability; we can then discuss roles that may match your background and the checks those roles require.
