How to register as a nurse in Australia

By Healthplus International · Published 8 November 2026

Planning your nursing career in Australia starts with knowing which registration route applies to you. Your qualification, registration history and clinical experience matter more than a general promise that one pathway works for everyone.

Start with your own qualification and registration history

Write down where you qualified, the nursing qualification you hold, where you are registered now and where you have practised. Keep your intended division clear: registered nurse and enrolled nurse are different registration categories. An overseas nursing qualification does not automatically authorise you to work as a nurse in Australia.

Check which application route applies

Australian graduates of approved programs and nurses registered in New Zealand have different application routes from many overseas applicants. Eligible internationally qualified registered nurses may qualify under the additional pathways introduced in April 2025 for nurses with registration and practice in approved comparable jurisdictions. These pathways have specific criteria; nationality alone does not establish eligibility. If you do not qualify, the existing internationally qualified nurse assessment process remains available. Use the NMBA guidance linked below to check your circumstances.

Complete the Self-check yourself where required

For the IQNM assessment route, read the official instructions before entering the exact qualification details from your certificate. You must complete your own Self-check; HPI or another agent cannot submit it for you. Its result identifies assessment steps, rather than guaranteeing registration. Follow the instructions issued for your individual outcome instead of booking examinations based on somebody else’s experience.

Prepare evidence and check the standards

Review the applicable qualification requirements and the NMBA standards for English language skills, criminal history, recency of practice and professional indemnity insurance arrangements. Use the current official document checklist for your route. Organise your evidence in a secure folder and check that names and dates are consistent. Confirm certification, translation and verification requirements before paying for these services.

Keep registration, work rights and recruitment separate

Ahpra processes registration applications on behalf of the NMBA. Registration, a visa or other work rights, and an employment offer are separate matters. Approval in one does not guarantee another. The NMBA advises applicants to avoid irreversible decisions such as resigning or relocating before registration approval. Build your plan around confirmed milestones, and seek migration advice from an appropriately authorised professional when needed.

How Healthplus can help

HPI offers fee-for-service administrative registration support, including document organisation and milestone coordination. You retain control of your application; Ahpra and the NMBA decide eligibility and outcomes. HPI recruits, employs and places Healthcare Workers and does not provide nursing training. Discuss the scope and fees before engaging support. No service can promise registration, a processing deadline or a job.
